A new year, same green grass

Happy New Year!

With 2023 upon us, a lot of people are setting goals for the year to come.  We get it and we agree, this practice is vital to living with intention in 2023.  But let us remind you, stay true to YOURSELF as you lay your foundation for growth.  Do not let anyone’s expectations or aspirations for you dictate your direction.

T.K. Coleman (we know him from The Minimalists) said “It can be fun to hear people say ‘I believe in you’ before you accomplish something.  It can be fun to hear people say ‘I was wrong about you’ when your success surprises them.  But nothing compares to hearing yourself say ‘This is the life I wanted.  I’m glad I listened to me.’ “

With this sentiment in mind, Catherine recently shared some thoughts on grass.  The metaphorical green kind…. I think this is the perfect time to reflect on how we choose to plant our seeds.

Green Grass:

“The grass isn’t always greener on the other side, grass is green where you water it”.

I appreciate the sentiment, but this is misleading.  The question we are all trying to answer is where to find happiness and this cliche sets the precedent you will always find happiness where you spend your focus.  If only happiness were that easy.

How often we find ourselves focused on what those around us want, instead of our own true self.  We confide in our therapists, preachers, friends and family, hoping they have the answer to where our own true happiness lies - turning to others in comparison as a gauge for where we stand on the happiness scale. What a beautiful and frustrating dilemma.

Why are we all searching for the most curated lawn anyway?

Roll with me here… Maybe you do want a country club lawn, or maybe you spent your life watering your green grass, only to find out you never wanted a front yard in the first place.

Your aspirations are your own and staying true to yourself takes more work than “water”.

All of that to say, I think this is where I land with “green grass”...

Notice the “grass” you have.  Understand your current circumstances, and then envision your ideal life.  Research how you can achieve your goals, and reverse engineer your path to achieve the life you want.  Take one step at a time and stay consistent.

… And remember, just like the calendar year, there are different seasons of life.  Sometimes your “grass” will thrive in ideal conditions, and sometimes you need to plant new seeds.  Just stay focused on your own “lawn”, that is, if you even want one ;)

We hope you have the BEST new year.
